What Are Porcelain Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are tiny porcelain shells that fit over teeth to cover minor defects, discoloration, and misalignment. Veneers look and feel completely authentic, since they are made of strong, translucent porcelain. With dental veneers, our patients from Del Mar and other San Diego communities can enjoy smile makeover results indistinguishable from their natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are custom-designed in a dental laboratory to complement each patient’s appearance. Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers have numerous benefits. Veneers are one of the best options for a smile makeover since they fully mask imperfections in a short amount of time. Since porcelain veneers are highly stain-resistant and bonded to the teeth with dental-grade cement, they can last for many years. While porcelain veneers are often all that is needed to transform a smile, they can complement other cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as teeth whitening, as part of a complete smile makeover.

Placement of Dental Veneers

Dr. Richard Sherman places porcelain dental veneers at our office serving La Jolla, Del Mar, and other San Diego communities. The placement process for veneers involves minimal discomfort, and typically requires two office visits after the initial consultation. During the first visit, Dr. Sherman begins by applying a local anesthetic. He then gently shaves away a tiny portion of the tooth to accommodate the veneer. Next, he makes a mold of the teeth and mouth, which he sends to the dental laboratory that will custom-craft the veneers. After making the mold, he applies temporary veneers to the teeth. The patient wears these temporary veneers until the permanent ones are ready – usually about one to two weeks – at which point he or she returns to our office to have the permanent veneers placed. In this second visit, Dr. Sherman again begins by applying a local anesthetic. Next, he gently removes the temporary veneers. He then bonds the permanent veneers to the teeth with strong cement, assuring a flawless fit with the teeth and bite. Finally, Dr. Sherman buffs the veneers to a shine for a dazzling final result.
