Torrey Pines Dental Arts provides outstanding endodontics, or root canal therapy, for patients from La Jolla, Del Mar, and throughout San Diego who need treatment for badly decayed or diseased teeth. Root canal therapy allows our dentists to preserve these teeth, since it provides an alternative to extraction. Dr. Michael G. Sherman, a practicing endodontist, provides expert treatment using a microscope.
Root canal therapy can salvage teeth that have diseased or decayed inner pulp, the soft core inside the tooth’s root canal. This inner pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues that nourish and help repair the tooth. Therefore, disease or injury to the pulp, often caused by cavities or trauma, can seriously damage the tooth. Moreover, if left untreated, a diseased root canal can abscess and infect the jawbone around the tooth, necessitating extraction. Endodontic care is an effective option for preserving teeth in their early stages of decay, since an endodontist can remove the diseased pulp but preserve the outer structure of the tooth. Patients suffering from tooth sensitivity, pain, and swelling may benefit from root canal therapy. If you live in Del Mar or another part of San Diego and are experiencing these symptoms, contact Torrey Pines Dental Arts to schedule a consultation.
The benefits of root canal therapy are numerous. Since endodontic care eliminates the need for extraction, patients are able to keep their natural teeth and can avoid having to get a dental implant or dental bridge. Root canal therapy also protects the teeth, gums, and jawbone from damage by completely eliminating infection. The final restoration, which often includes a dental crown, is natural-looking and comfortable. Patients who undergo a root canal procedure at our office in La Jolla can enjoy all the benefits of the treatment with none of the stress, thanks to the sedation dentistry techniques used at Torrey Pines Dental Arts.
Dr. Michael Sherman provides root canal therapy at our La Jolla office so patients from Del Mar and nearby areas can receive needed treatment from a dentist they know and trust. The procedure generally involves multiple visits to our office. During the first visit, we begin by administering anesthetic. Next, using a camera attached to an endodontic microscope for excellent visibility, he makes a small opening in the crown of the tooth to gain access to the tooth’s root canal and pulp. Then, he carefully removes the pulp. He also cleans and shapes the canal to a form that can be filled. We then fill the cleared canal with medication to prevent infection. Once we have removed the infection, we then place a temporary filling to protect the tooth until the next dental visit. During the second visit, he removes the temporary filling and cleans the canal. He then fills the canal with a strong material that will permanently replace the tooth’s pulp and support the tooth. Once the root canal procedure is complete, your doctor will place a beautiful ceramic crown over the tooth. With proper dental hygiene and regular oral exams, the restoration can last a lifetime.
