Dr. Richard L. Sherman
Dr. Richard L. Sherman has been practicing dentistry for over 30 years, fulfilling his childhood dream. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Harvey Sherman, when he chose to pursue a career in dentistry. A talented general, restorative, and cosmetic dentist, he provides some of the best care available in the La Jolla area.
Dr. Richard L. Sherman’s diverse educational and professional background makes him a highly distinguished cosmetic dentist in San Diego. Richard Sherman, D.D.S., earned his undergraduate degree from Ohio State University and his dental degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. Then, Dr. Sherman completed his General Practice Residency at Dayton Ohio’s Miami Valley Hospital, where he ran its TMJ clinic for over 10 years. After completing his formal training, Dr. Richard Sherman joined his father in private practice, where he gained years of experience in orthodontics and general dentistry.
Dr. Richard L. Sherman brings these experiences into his current practice at Torrey Pines Dental Arts in La Jolla, where he provides exceptional TMJ treatment, restorative treatments, and cosmetic options. Dr. Sherman is also a certified Invisalign® provider. He is an on-call staff member of the respected Scripps Memorial Hospital and a faculty member of the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Sherman also volunteers his time at San Diego’s Dental Free Clinic.
Dr. Richard L. Sherman is affiliated with numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), the American Dental Association (ADA), the International Association of Comprehensive Aesthetics, the International Association of Orthodontics, the American Orthodontic Society, the California Dental Association, and the Alpha Omega Fraternity.
Dr. Steven Horne
Dr. Steven Horne began his career at Brigham Young University obtaining his B.A. in English. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 2007 from the University of Southern California where his pursuit for academic excellence landed him on the Dean's list throughout dental school. He was recognized for his superior clinical skills and invited to be part of an esthetic selective group, focused on extensive training to provide the highest level of cosmetic restorative dentistry. He was also asked to help teach other dental students in courses on restorative dentistry, prosthodontics and tooth anatomy. In his spare time, he provided dental care for underserved populations of Los Angeles and Orange counties, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
Following dental school, Dr. Horne moved to Fort Knox, KY and practiced dentistry as an Army Dental Officer for 4 years. During this time, he was appointed Officer in Charge of a dental clinic in Baghdad, Iraq, received multiple Army Achievement Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, and served as Company Commander. Now that his Army career has culminated, he is excited to join Dr. Sherman and the entire team at Torrey Pines Dental Arts.
Dr. Horne is a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Horne has also applied for privileges at Scripps Memorial Hospital. Dr. Horne enjoys a passion for his work that is evident to all of his patients. When it comes to his patients, he will only recommend the treatment he would want for himself. As a patient, you can trust Dr. Horne as a consistent source of gentle, experienced dental care.
Dr. Horne has been married to his wife, Christy, for 9 years and has a chocolate Labrador named Roscoe. They spend their free time together exploring the outdoors, hiking, and running. He also enjoys singing, golfing, and waterskiing.
Dr. Michael G. Sherman
Michael G. Sherman D.M.D., son of Dr. Richard Sherman, provides endodontic expertise for Torrey Pines Dental Arts. He consults regularly with Dr. Sherman on difficult cases and offers treatment options for patients whose endodontic therapy requires the use of a microscope. The use of microscopes has revolutionized clinical practices in many disciplines and specialties. We are pleased to offer microscope-assisted endodontics to our patients.
Michael G. Sherman grew up in southern Ohio and attended the University of Wisconsin. Michael graduated from Wisconsin with a bachelor's degree in Biology and went on to do research at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Washington, DC. After a year at the NIH, Michael moved to Boston, where he attended Tufts University and received his Doctor of Medical Dentistry (D.M.D.). Immediately following graduation, Dr. Michael was accepted into a two-year endodontic residency program at Nova Southeastern University, in Fort Lauderdale. He is now a practicing endodontist with offices in Vista and Fallbrook.
Dr. Michael Sherman has joined Torrey Pines Dental Arts so that he can practice regularly with his father, a dream come true for them both. When he is not involved in the practice of endodontics you'll find Michael and his wife, Lauren, spending time with friends in Solana Beach. Michael is a passionate surfer, and loves all outdoor activities, including bike riding, hiking, and golf. In May, Dr. Michael and his wife welcomed their first child, Ryder. In his spare time, Dr. Michael loves craft beers, jazz music, and reading.
Michael G. Sherman D.M.D. is a published author in the Journal of Endodontics. He is a member of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the California Dental Association (CDA). He is very active in the dental community in San Diego belongs to many local organizations and study clubs.

Harry R. Cole, D.D.S.
Dr. Harry R. Cole is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who practices a full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His expertise ranges from dental implants, bone grafts, and wisdom teeth removal to extensive orthognathic surgery. Dr. Cole joined Torrey Pines Dental Arts this year to expand his practice from the military to private practice. He has applied for privileges at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, so that he can collaborate with Dr. Sherman and Dr. Horne on trauma cases referred from the ER.
Dr. Cole was born in the Los Angeles area, but grew up in Colorado Springs, CO. He graduated with a BS in Chemistry from the University of Southern Colorado. It was his enjoyment of working with people that influenced his decision to pursue a degree in dentistry. He graduated from the University of Colorado Dental School in 2001. Dr. Cole joined the Navy in 1988, and alternated between military practice and academia until he completed his Oral Surgery Residency training at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and is certified in General Anesthesia, enabling him to provide the highest level of comfort for patients who need to be treated surgically.
Dr. Cole continues to serve in the U.S. Navy and has been deployed four times over his career. He attributes his most significant experiences in Oral Surgery to handling severe maxillofacial trauma for military personnel during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr. Cole has been married for 16 years to his wife Susan, and has three sons, Andrew, Tyler, and Luke. They have made San Diego their home for the last 6 years and plan to stay in the area until he retires. When not performing Oral Surgery, Dr. Cole and his family enjoy traveling, camping, dirt toys, and football.
About the Staff
At Torrey Pines Dental Arts we are very proud of our highly trained professional staff. Each team member is licensed as either a Registered Dental Assistant or Registered Dental Hygienist. In addition, Ed is currently studying for, and will soon be licensed, as an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant. Many of them have earned additional certifications, making them well-qualified to assist our doctors in providing excellent care.
